Windfarm ready to take on 28 staff from Furness

NW Evening Mail, Wednesday, 08 September 2010

A WIND turbine manufacturer is creating 28 Furness jobs.

German wind turbine manufacturer REpower is advertising the jobs in the Barrow area to support the installation and operation of its biggest offshore wind farm to date.

REpower has begun recruitment for 24 service engineers and four management roles for its Barrow operation, due to begin in the summer of 2011.

The training programme for the positions will include work experience at existing offshore windfarms in Germany and Belgium, and the jobs will be retained following completion of the installation.

Rick Eggleston, managing director of REpower UK, said: “This is an exciting and challenging project for REpower. Each wind turbine weighs 315 tonnes and is 160 metres tall to the blade tip, so the job of shipping and installing them requires a lot of manpower and a lot of skill.

“Ideally we’re looking for people with experience in servicing and maintaining electrical industrial plant or mechanical rotating plant, but we’ve also got a comprehensive training plan in place. Perhaps just as important are seaworthiness and a head for heights.”

The Ormonde windfarm will see 30 REpower turbines installed in the Irish Sea, 35km off the coast of Barrow, during the summer of 2011. The wind turbines will be assembled in Belfast ship yard, and shipped on barges to Barrow for installation.

The news was welcomed by Invest in Cumbria, the body tasked with encouraging investment and the creation of new jobs in the county.

Archie Workman, investor development manager at Invest in Cumbria, said: “The creation of these new skilled jobs will of course bring a boost to Barrow’s economy and further raise its profile as the wind energy hub of Britain’s Energy Coast.

“During these tough economic times it is hugely encouraging that sustainable jobs with a long term future are being created in Barrow: a town which is truly on the radar of high profile international companies involved in the off-shore wind sector.”

Since its launch in 2004 REpower has delivered 26 onshore wind farms in England, Scotland and Wales and one offshore windfarm in the North Sea. REpower will host a careers open day between 3pm and 7pm tomorrow (thurs 9/9) at the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel in Abbey Road, Barrow.
